Curator's Note
“In 'Gaze' (2025), Kwaku Osei Owusu Achim presents a dreamlike composition where figures, at times surrealistically double-headed, seem to float in a misty atmosphere, all interconnected by mind and body. Infused with a spiritual dimension, the painting serves as a repository of reflections on sign language and the invisible ties that bind people together. The work explores the boundaries of human empathy by visually representing modes of verbal and non-verbal communication.”
About the Artist
Kwaku Osei Owusu Achim (b. 1991, Kwahu, Ghana) is an emerging visual artist based in Accra. His practice centers on hand sign language as a vital mode of communication, shaped by his experience teaching art to children with special needs—an encounter that continues to inform his exploration of expression, access, and agency within systems of care and communication. In 2021, he was a visiting fellow at the Noldor Artist Residency in Accra.
